Abstract

In every domain of reasoning humans deploy a wide range of intuitive 'theories' about how the world works. So are we alone in trying to make sense of the world by postulating theoretical entities to explain how the world works, or do we share this ability with other species? This is the focus of Povinelli's book.

Abstract

Cognition implies perception and judgement. Perception consists in interpreting a sensory stimulus: it is a common process in every animal with a brain, and can be described as a Bayesian inference where the interpretive algorithm is stored in long-term memory. Judgement, on the other hand, is related to the comparison between two perceptions which are coded in a language, in that short-term memory presents the first perception once again and compares it with the second. This operation is called inverted Bayes’ theorem and while it does not presuppose an algorithm, it builds a new one using comparison. The book shows how the algorithmic leaps related to linguistic operations capture aspects of reality which cannot be reached through Bayesian chains of inference following the same algorithm.

Abstract

"The purpose of the book is to deliver a critical review of the literature and author's research data relevant for understanding the phenomena of curiosity, information seeking behavior, and novelty seeking. The book is designed to be a comprehensive and systematic lecture of areas related to the main subject in a way that will enable the reader to grasp the notion of development in terms of the evolutionary time scale and ontogenesis. Each of the subjects is explained on the basis of three perspectives: ultimate factors, integrative levels, and proximate mechanisms. This work is intended to integrate approaches adopted within psychology, ethology, and behavioral neuroscience. The major uniqueness is related to the integrative levels framework, which is not very often utilized the the contemporary books on the subject. This is why the book offers holistic, complete presentation of the area that it does cover. It should be of interests of students of psychology, animal behavior, as well teachers and educators. It provides refreshing cues for creative thinking about human curiosity. The present edition includes new data and the discussion of the new literature on the subject"--

Abstract

Taking a psychobiological approach, this text argues that emotional systems in humans, as well as other animals, are combinations of innate and learned tendencies and that there are no credible ways to really separate nature and nurture.
